Tiger Woods and the Masters: The Odds He'll Win

Tiger Woods;the Masters

Tiger Woods has been counted out before.

In 2004 Woods lost his status as golf's number one player to Vijay Singh, prompting the BBC to point to "a stark story of a golfer in decline." His prompt answer? Winning the 2005 Buick Invitational, the Ford Championship at Doral, and the Masters. As Woods revs up for this year's Masters, we note that the odds Tiger Woods will win a Masters tournament he enters are 1 in 3.25. His odds of placing in the top 10 in a Masters are 1 in 1.3 (77%).

In 2008 Woods underwent arthroscopic knee surgery (for the second time) and some wondered whether he would return to top form, though doctors consider the short-term prognosis for these kinds of surgeries fairly good. His answer? Winning six tournaments in 2009 (though no majors). The odds Tiger Woods will win a tournament he enters are 1 in 3.56—colossal odds, considering there are hundreds of players on the PGA Tour.

This year, after the sex scandal that had the world (and the business) of professional golf flailing in the woods, fans, sponsors, and the whole sport of golf are again waiting with bated breath to see if Woods can dig himself out of the rough once again. By the numbers, it seems likely. And knowing Woods' preference for focusing on the majors, it's worth noting that his odds of winning a major tournament he enters are 1 in 3.57—almost exactly the same odds he'll win any tournament. By contrast, the odds he'll miss the cut in a major are just 1 in 25.

I think Tiger is a money hungry cheating lying sack of snot. As is Nike. They work people to death in all the 3 world countries to make rinning shoes. Then pay a cheat like Tiger a billion dollars.
Go figure that out

Everyone needs to heal . Tiger has much to sort out and hopefully with time Elin can heal too. Tiger is a great golfer and I give him much credit for that. We must forgive and move on.

@anonymous (2 previous): "How about hearing about Phil Mickelson, who is a true gentleman, both off and on the course."

I'll bet Phil Mickelson wrote that.

Continuing to support an individual who has lied and betrayed many in his personal and professional life is unfortunate. We all contribute to his financial success...we support celebrities by buying their products...we are all responsible for creating icons and we are equally responsible to watching them fall. No one is perfect so, why continue to financially support the illusion of perfection...

Oh, please. Tiger Woods is an athlete, not a saint. Anyone who expects him to be above the realm of human frailty has a right to be disappointed. The only people who should have a problem with his infidelity are his wife and his family.

I wonder what it would be like if we knew everything about everybody. no secrets or skeletons in the closet. how many would be left to judge?

He should have never commented except to publicly apologize to his wife. It's none of the public's frigging business. The women that knowingly participated and then acted like they had been slighted should be the one's ashamed of themselves. What a bunch of indiscreet attention whores.

I think he's actually going to pull off a win...what a comeback that would be and all we'll hear about is how great Tiger is...Maybe other golfers will start sleeping with oodles of women too to better their golf game!

Good point, anonymous, re: why other sports drop players for their indecency... except that Tiger is his own team owner and general manager. So, he won't be firing himself, anytime soon. Note: he did bench himself for a few months...

I have to say that if we were all judged of our past mistakes we wouldn't be allowed to do a lot of things. While I don't agree with what Tiger Woods has done over the psat year he's heart is golf and he's said he's sorry time and time again for what he did too his family. We can't judge the man because of what he did. Work stays at work and home stays at home.

I would be content to let Tiger put things in the past like he says and watch the golfer, not be concerned with the person. However, it's hard to "put things behind you" when you agree to a commercial with Nike that uses your dead father's voice, along with your current life situation to sell running shoes. Always the dollars, even over this huh, Tiger? Cash in on your dead father's voice to try and sell yourself as a changed man, along with anything emblazened with a Nike swoosh.

So he can have a perfectly orchestrated "apology" in which he answers no questions whatsoever and state emphatically that this is his private life and we are to stay out of it. But then he can star in a commercial trying to sell the public an image of a changed man for another dollar? Height of hypocrisy. Can't have it both ways.

if you kicked out all the a-holes the major sports leagues would be a lot smaller. You kind of need to be an a-hole to have the competitiveness it takes to get to the top, no?

why do we always assume our sports heroes are heroic in their lives too?

and why do we love the public ritual of shaming and return to grace so much?

what do i think? he's a loser and should lose. the PGA should have dropped him for his indecency like other major sports teams do. he shouldn't even be allowed to play. he's a disgrace to all the family stands for.
