Definitions
MedicaidThe Medicaid question on the ASEC supplement attempted to identify all persons who were 'covered' by Medicaid at any time during the previous calendar year. The term 'covered' means enrolled in the Medicaid program, i.e., had a Medicaid medical assistance card, or incurred medical bills which were paid for by Medicaid. In order to be counted, the person did not have to receive medic al care paid for by Medicaid. After data collection and creation of an initial microdata file, further refinements were made to assign Medicaid coverage to children. In this procedure all children under 21 years old in families were assumed to be covered by Medicaid if either the householder or spouse reported being covered by Medicaid.
WhiteThis race category refers to individuals who report being only white, when asked to select all that apply from the race categories of white, black or African American, American Indian and Alaska native, Asian, or Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander.
