I think you're reading it wrong. I believe this to mean that if there is a fatal firearms accident, the odds that a white male aged 20-54 will have been a fatality in the accident are 1:2.5. The qualifier is that the accident occurs.

Either I'm reading this wrong, or there's something wrong with the statistic. The odds of dying to a gunshot are one in 2.5? Seriously? That has to be way, way off.
