The Super Bowl Odds As We See Them

The odds a person plans to watch the Super Bowl are 1 in 1.43 (70%). These are the same odds that a man showers at least once a day, that an adult 18 or older uses the Internet regularly, and the odds that a 36 year-old woman will live to at least the age of 77.
It will come as little surprise that the viewing audience for the Super Bowl is skewed by gender. The odds a woman will be watching the Super Bowl are 1 in 1.6 (63%), the same odds a person in the Midwest drinks milk once a day. The odds a man will be watching are higher, 1 in 1.3 (77%), the same odds that an adult using a public restroom was observed washing his or her hands.
But so much for watching—what are the odds of playing in the Super Bowl? The question had to have crossed the minds of Marques Colston’s parents as they put in endless hours on the sidelines, starting at the Pee Wee level when Marques was six. There was no doubt he had inherited some talent—his dad, James, played briefly in the Canadian Football League. But we are talking a short stint in Maple Leaf territory. Hardly the chromosomes handed to the Manning boys.
Nor did Marques pick schools that would give him high-powered illumination—not like Texan Drew Brees who spent his high school years under the Friday Night Lights. Marques went to Susquehanna Township High in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, student population around 1,000. Then he turned down a scholarship ride to UMissouri in favor of Hofstra. The last time the words Hofstra and football were joined together was to announce that they had given up on the latter altogether.
So for all the parents out there dreaming their progeny will grow up to catch the winning touchdown in the ultimate Big Game, here are the odds a player will make it to the Super Bowl—and secure that ring.
The odds are 1 in 64,903. It’s twice as likely (1 in 32,110) your tyke will grow up to work in a quarry splitting rocks.
At least all the physical exercise will have paid off.
The odds a high school male plays football are 1 in 7.91.
The odds a male high school football player will play in college are 1 in 17.25.
The odds a college football player will be drafted to the NFL are 1 in 55.56.
