In October, 2009, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb made his 200th career touchdown pass, a 45-yard throw to Desean Jackson to score on the Washington Redskins. McNabb is one of only 28 quarterbacks in NFL history to have thrown 200 or more touchdown passes. The first was Y.A. Tittle in 1963.
That's some tough work, considering the odds an NFL pass will be a touchdown are only 1 in 25.29—at least this week. With 5 touchdown passes against the Chicago Bears on November 8, Kurt Warner of the Arizona Cardinals put himself in position to change those odds in his next game: he now has 198 career touchdown passes.
Of the quarterbacks with 200 career touchdown passes, 4 are currently active in the NFL, making the odds an active NFL quarterback has thrown at least 200 touchdowns 1 in 8. Some facts about those 4:
Brett Favre is the NFL's all-time leader in touchdown passes, with 476 of them. It has surely helped that Favre has logged by far the most consecutive regular season starts as a QB. From September 27, 1992, to present, he has missed not a single game, for a total of 276 starts. (For an idea of the enormity of this number, consider that the next-highest number of consecutive games is almost 100 fewer; it belongs to Peyton Manning, who has started 182 straight games.) Some of Favre's other NFL records are truly staggering:
- Career passing yards: 66,474 (about 37.8 miles).
- Career pass completions: 5,844
- Career interceptions thrown: 312
Favre is also the first and only QB to win against all 32 teams in the NFL.
Peyton Manning has thrown the 3rd-most touchdown passes in league history: 348. Like Favre, Manning has started a large number of consecutive games, has had a Super Bowl victory, and has beaten 31 other NFL teams (Unlike Favre, Manning has only played for one team, so he can’t have beaten all 32). Some of his notable NFL touchdown records include: most games with 4 or more touchdowns in a season (6, tied with Dan Marino); most games with 5 or more touchdowns in a career (7, including 1 playoff game); and the highest career touchdowns/game average, for a QB, with 150 TD's (1.89 TD's per game). Furthermore, in a 2007 executive survey conducted by Sports Business Daily, Manning was voted the NFL's most marketable player—he has advertising contracts with Sony, Gatorade, Sprint, MasterCard, and DirecTV, to name a few.
Tom Brady has 212 touchdown passes to his credit, passing the 200 mark in September, just weeks before McNabb. Aspects of Brady's life on and off the field make near constant news: his relationship and child with actress Bridget Moynahan, his marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen, and, most recently, his record-setting quarter during the Patriots 59-0 win over the Tennessee Titans on October 18. During that game, Brady threw for the most touchdown passes ever in a single quarter: 5. His team set NFL records for biggest halftime lead (45-0) and biggest end-of-game points margin (59-0, tying the Rams' 59-0 win over the Falcons in 1970). Among Brady's other records are:
- Most regular-season touchdown passes: 50
- Most consecutive post-season wins: 10
- Most completions in Super Bowl (career)
- Longest streak of games with 3 touchdowns: 10
He also helped set the NFL's record for the longest winning streak (21 consecutive games in 2 seasons), and has 3 Super Bowl championship rings, more than Brett Favre (1), Peyton Manning (1), and Donovan McNabb (0) combined.
Donovan McNabb, the newest member of the "200 Club," reached the milestone on October 26th. (McNabb also achieved 30,000 passing yards in the same game.) He's been active with the Philadelphia Eagles since 1999, and appeared in one Super Bowl (XXXIX), losing to Tom Brady's Patriots. Furthermore, McNabb holds NFL records for most consecutive pass completions in a game (24, against the NY Giants in 2004) and for being on average the least-intercepted quarterback of all time (90 interceptions out of 4,303 attempts, or 2.09%).
