Lingering hangovers, deep sunburn, sexually transmitted infections, unplanned pregnancy, embarrassing memories of sexual misadventure—during spring break, not everything that happens in Cancún stays in Cancún.

That college students are likely to engage in risky behavior over spring break comes as no surprise. If anything, it's become a cultural expectation, popularized by movies, MTV, and who knows how many straight-to-DVD sexploitation video series. Expecting that college students will get rowdy, handsy, and drunk, some popular spring break locales often prepare ahead of time, dialing up their police presence in order to deal with the inrush of drunk-and-disorderly behavior. But what exactly are the spring break crowd's risky behaviors, and how likely are they?

The likeliest, and most available, is drinking. The odds a male college student spending spring break in Panama City Beach, Florida reports being drunk every single day during spring break are 1 in 2.47, about the same odds a female college student on a spring break vacation will get drunk at least once during that time (1 in 2.52). The other abounding temptation, of course, is sex—which often goes hand-in-hand with a few Daiquiris or a Modelo or four. The odds a female college student will have plenty of opportunities for sex during spring break are 1 in 1.59 (63%), And the odds a female student will report she had sex as a result of drinking during spring break are 1 in 2.63.

In fact, 1 in 1.39 males (72%) and 1 in 1.45 females (69%) intends to almost always—or always—drink alcohol before having sex during his or her next spring break—making the holiday a predictably fertile breeding ground for all sorts of risky behaviors.

Unprotected sex. The odds a male college student reports using a condom during his last sexual experience during his last spring break are 1 in 1.71 (only 58%), and female college students report using them even less often, 1 in 2.17—an abysmal 46% of the time.

Binge drinking. During spring break vacations, 1 in 4.67 male college students and 1 in 13.7 female college students report passing out from drinking at least once.

Random hook-ups. During spring break, the odds a female college student will have sex with someone new she meets are 1 in 3.25; a male college student, 1 in 3.37. Getting to know one another is not exactly an issue, either. The odds a male college student reports having sex with someone new the day he met them during his last spring break are 1 in 4.74. For women, the odds are far lower: only 1 in 20.41.

Consensual but unwanted sex. During her next spring break, the odds a female college student expects to be pressured sexually are 1 in 4.29. Nor are men immune from this pressure. Even more of them predict they will feel it: the odds a male college student expects to be pressured sexually during his next spring break are 1 in 4.03.

When it comes to sexually-inspired spring break antics, there seems to be almost no limit to collegian creativity and energy—as when seven students recently appeared in a Palm Beach K-Mart dressed in Speedos, dresses, and pantyhose, brandishing a particularly "lifelike" sex toy. "We tried to find something to do," said one of the seven, but because of the colder weather, "we just couldn’t." Beyond alcohol, during spring break it seems another simple risk factor is: boredom.
