TUESDAY - 29 ACROSS: BETWEEN HEALTH CARE AND A HARD PLACE

When I was hired at my place of work last August, I was given health insurance. I was really happy about this. I was ecstatic, mostly because I hadn’t had health insurance in a really long time. I was living in Cambodia for nearly three years, where health care is something to be avoided if you can help it.

MONDAY - THE RE-EDUCATION OF JON PITTS-WILEY: HOW MANY OF US HAVE THEM?

As we grow up and become men whose lives revolve around more than sleepovers or game tape or college visits or bachelor pads, I recognize my friendship with Kelechi set the tone for many of my adult relationships.

FRIDAY - MAKING ROUNDS: TIME TO WORRY ABOUT MYSELF

Medical students and residents are probably some of the least healthy, most non-compliant, terrible patients you could ever meet.

THURSDAY - KNOCKED OFF BALANCE: ANATOMY OF A TANTRUM

This morning’s cycle of doom started off when a friendly parent who had already gone through the front door opened it for Finn. Big mistake.

WEDNESDAY - LETTER FROM AFGHANISTAN: THINGS HAVE CHANGED

The gym looked like something you would find in a prison yard: a bunch of sweaty tattooed guys standing in an odd circle around one grunting man struggling to thrust a barbell upwards. TUESDAY - 29 ACROSS: NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Those first weeks in Boston, when I knew no one, I tried planting little seeds of life wherever I could. I found a guy on Craigslist to help me move some furniture, and offered to buy him breakfast afterwards. I made plans to get coffee with my landlord. Twice.

As I jumped into bed last night, I found myself puzzling over various things; the sort of puzzling one is wont to do when they are trying to get warm in bed and aren’t yet at the point where their brain has volunteered to shut itself down for the evening. Sitting there, I stumbled upon a question: How come guys in porno don’t take their socks off?

FRIDAY - MAKING ROUNDS: LOSS

There’ve been a range of reasons identified as to why medical students lose empathy: stress, the ward focus on problem solving, lack of role models, increase in cynicism. For me, I think it’s a mixture of de-sensitization and self-preservation.

THURSDAY - KNOCKED OFF BALANCE: MOVING ON?

I’ve had an odd case of wanderlust lately, and not just thirst for travel, which is a permanent condition with me, particularly since I’ve had three kids who aren’t the world’s best travel mates. I’ve been thinking a lot about moving.

WEDNESDAY - LETTER FROM AFGHANISTAN: STAYING CONNECTED

The Internet also seems to work when I don't have any pressing issues and lots of time to kill—when I decide to try and get back in touch with "the world." I seem to exist in my own bubble, unaware of the planet Earth passing by around me.
