Definitions

Gypsy

(Roma, Sinti), People who had been living in Europe since the fifteenth century, who share a common language, common culture, and until the twentieth century a
wandering way of life. Also called Roma, approximately 200,000 perished in the Holocaust. They are believed to have originated from India, and then migrated by
way of Iran into Eastern Europe then moving slowing into Western Europe. Gypsies are predominantly Catholic, and until recently much of their language was strictly
oral.
