Definitions
Federally declared disasterIf, in a state struck by some disaster or catastrophe, the recovery and rebuilding efforts will require greater resources than are available to state and local governments, they may appeal to the federal government to issue a presidential declaration. When successful, these declarations – which are tailored to the specific type of disaster, and to the type of assistance needed – allow state and local governments in afflicted areas to access federal relief and assistance programs.
